Frequently Asked Questions

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes! We'd love to schedule an appointment for you.

Do you accept my insurance?

As a courtesy to our patients, we bill all insurance companies. We can also check with your dental insurance to help you better understand your benefits.

I'm a very nervous patient. How can you help me?

It's very common for people of all ages to feel nervous about visiting the dentist. No worries! You'll feel more at ease if you set up a free consultation with us. That way you can visit our office and meet Dr. Tinkle, Dr. Yoon, and Dr. Callan to see if Belmont Family Dentistry is the right fit for you. Having an informal, no-obligation visit like this puts many people at ease while they choose what's best for them.

What is considered a true dental emergency?

The following are examples of true dental emergencies where you would need immediate dental care to protect your long-term oral health:

  • Bleeding that won’t stop
  • A loose or knocked-out permanent tooth
  • An injured jaw
  • Painful swelling
  • Painful toothache (dental abscess)

Do I have to have x-rays taken?

X-rays help Dr. Tinkle, Dr. Yoon, and Dr. Callan diagnose necessary treatment as well as any potential problems. We might be able to transfer your recent x-rays from your previous dental office to Belmont Family Dentistry.

Keep in mind that sometimes transferred x-rays lose their quality, so we might need to take some new x-rays to make sure we have a clear picture of your dental health. This is so we can provide you with the best care possible.

What ages of people do you treat?

We provide comprehensive care for all ages.

What are the first steps for a patient who hasn’t been to a dentist in a long time?

First, we’ll take x-rays of your entire mouth. X-rays help Dr. Tinkle, Dr. Yoon, and Dr. Hoffman diagnose necessary treatment as well as any potential problems. After that, your doctor will conduct a comprehensive dental exam.

The information gathered from your initial visit will be enough for your doctor to prepare a customized treatment plan for you that you can follow at your own pace.

What makes Belmont Family Dentistry different from other dental practices?

Once you step into our office, you'll be greeted warmly by our compassionate and non-judgemental staff.

Each person on our team has up-to-date training, and we invest in the newest technologies. We're able to give you quality care by improving your teeth here in our office and by giving you great dental care tips to take home with you.

Do you offer payment plans?

Please see our Billing Policies.

Why is Preventive Dental Care important?

Preventive Dental Care involves regular dental exams to help protect your oral health and general well being.

It also involves promoting optimal tooth and gum health through patient education of adopting good oral hygiene practices to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. In having good oral hygiene, patients can avoid cavities, gingivitis (inflammation of gum tissue), periodontal disease (gum disease), and enamel loss.

Visit our page on Preventive Dental Care to learn more about which toothpaste is best to use, what is considered good oral hygiene, and why it is important to limit sugar intake.

Why are dental sealants important for school-aged children?

Sealants have been shown to reduce the risk of tooth decay by 80% in molars. This is especially important when it comes to your child’s dental health. In October 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), released a report on the importance of sealants for school-aged children stating that “school-age children without sealants have almost three times more cavities than children with sealants.”

What is the difference between teeth whitening and bleaching?

The terms teeth whitening and bleaching are often used interchangeably. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), whitening is the process of restoring the natural color of teeth by removing stains from the tooth surface (removing extrinsic stains). Teeth bleaching, on the other hand, refers to whitening teeth beyond their natural color (changing the intrinsic color of teeth). Similarly, both methods are used for improving the color of teeth.

These methods either restore the original color of teeth (whitening) or brighten them beyond their original color (bleaching).

Whatever whitening option interests you Dr. Tinkle, Dr. Yoon, or Dr. Hoffman will recommend the best method for your unique set of pearly whites. Call us today at (503) 234-1218 to request an appointment.

Do you offer Invisalign at Belmont Family Dentistry?

Yes, we do offer Invisalign at Belmont Family Dentistry. Ask our doctors, Dr. Tinkle and Dr. Yoon, how Invisalign may help you.

Can Invisalign fix a gap between your two front teeth?

Yes, Invisalign can help fix a gap between your two front teeth. To learn more about Invisalign and how these aligners can help improve your smile, contact us today at (503) 234-1218 to request an appointment.

Are dental crowns recommended for children?

A dental crown may be recommended for children under the following circumstances:

  • To save a primary baby tooth that has been so damaged by decay that it can’t support a filling.
  • To protect the teeth of a child at high risk for tooth decay, especially when a child has difficulty keeping up with daily oral hygiene.
  • To decrease the frequency of general anesthesia for children unable to cooperate with requirements of proper dental care because of age, behavior, or medical history.
